Separation Technologies Company History

Separation Technologies was founded in 1989 to develop commercial applications for a proprietary electrostatic separation process invented by one of the company’s founders. By 1994, Separation Technologies was focusing on applying its separation technology to processing fly ash that could be used in high value commercial applications rather than being disposed of in landfills. The opportunity to process ash, to remove excess unburned carbon, came as a result of NOx control equipment that coal-fired power plants installed to comply with NOx emission standards in the 1990 Clean Air Act.

Since its first commercial operation in 1995, Separation Technologies has installed twelve full-scale commercial separator systems at eight power generations plants in the US, Canada and United Kingdom. Two additional systems will be commercially producing ProAsh® by the end of 2006 and with a recently signed agreement Separation Technologies will have built, owned and operated a total of 18 separation units by the end of 2007.

Since inception, our technical and marketing expertise have driven our strong growth rate, as measured by commercial sites in operation, tons of ash processed, and tons of ash sold and shipped. This rapid growth of Separation Technologies generated more than one million tons of fly ash per year for utilization in various construction applications.

Separation Technologies leads the industry through innovation in technology, marketing, and commercial success. These innovations include constant improvements in our separation processes; a commercially-viable process for removing ammonia residue from fly ash; and development of the first differentiated, high-value fly ash brand, ProAsh®.

In 2002, Separation Technologies became part of the Titan America family of businesses. Titan America is one of the premier cement and building materials producers in the Eastern United States. Titan America is best known by its brand and business names: Essex Cement, Roanoke Cement, Tarmac and now Separation Technologies. Titan America operations include cement plants, ready-mix concrete plants, concrete block plants, quarries, import and rail terminals, as well as fly ash production facilities. In 2005, Titan America revenues reached nearly one billion dollars. Headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, the company employs more than 2,300 people. Titan America’s parent, Titan Cement, the parent compay of the Titan Group, is headquartered in Athens Greece with worldwide annual cement production of more than 15 million tons.
